Alright, folks. One of the more recent episodes that seemed to hit a nerve with people was #126. Specifically, our opinions on THE HUNGER GAMES. Here's your chance to make us see the light.
One of the points I made was that I felt the movie wasn't frightening enough. I don't know if that means it needed more onscreen violence or imagery or suspense. All i know is, it wasn't "scary" enough.
I understand that the political and social implications of the story are the overall point, but the fact is that this is the first part in a three part story. This first part is mostly about a tournament in which children are forced to fight to the death. WIth that background, the movie NEEDS to scare me. It needs to make me sick to my stomach at the thought of the tournament. I don't think it accomplished that.
Thoughts? -Brendan

What isn't frightening about the political and social implications in the movie?
Every year we are taking two of your children. Why? To remind you that your place is down there in the gutter and that we are superior to you.
The fighting may be the showcase, but it's the things in the background that's supposed to pull your heart strings. Be it Katniss' sacrifice to save her sister or her defiance towards the games themselves. Not to mentions the grotesqueness of most of the capital city's citizens.

I agree. Terrifying political and social implications. 100% agree, logically.
It didn't hit me on a carnal level. I'm sorry. IT's not the lack of gore. It's not the lack of focus spent on the game itself. Something about it just didn't reach in and rattle my core. And I kinda wanted it to.
You know what DID rattle my core? Battle Royale.
Just sayin'.
